Highlanders Trim Klein
Oak 6-4
On a night when the sticks were less than potent, TWHS
sophomores played flawless defense and secured a 6-4 win over Klein Oak.
Although the sophs totaled eight hits, nine runners were stranded
in what could have been a comfortable victory.
TWHS scored five runs in their first two at-bats. Ross
Watson’s dinger scored Robbie Ray before him in the first and the sophs punched
across three more in the second without the benefit of a base hit. Three walks,
a hit batter and two Oak errors contributed to the Highlander cause. Ray, Derek
Smith and Steven Maxwell crossed the plate during the second to stake the sophs
to a 5-0 lead after two. Oak tightened
things up in the fourth when they bunched four hits and a walk to move to
within 5-4. In the Highlander fourth, Josh Bickle drove in Chris Frey who had
led off the inning with a hit. Walks to Smith and Charlie Marling loaded the
bases but no one else crossed the plate as the sophs increased their lead to
6-4, the eventual final tally.
Frey earned the win with a complete game five hitter and
struck out three. The TWHS infielders were responsible for 15 of the 21 outs
made in the contest. With the victory, the sophs district record improved to 8-1
and the season slate to 11-2.
