Highlanders Late Rally
Fizzles; Drop 7-5 Contest to Spring
TWHS sophomores left the bases loaded in their seventh inning
at-bat against the Spring Lions and dropped their second district game, 7-5.
The Highlanders led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth
after scoring three times in the third and once in the fourth. In the third
inning, Rory Miller and Steven Maxwell led off the frame with base hits. After
Maxwell was caught stealing, Chris Frey’s infield grounder drove in Miller.
After Paul Goldschmidt walked and stole second, Charlie Marling drove in Robbie
Ray who also had walked. Goldschmidt scored on a throwing error putting TWHS in
front 3-1.
Ross Watson homered in the fourth to double up Spring at 4-2.
The Lions took the lead in the fifth combining four hits and
three walks to take a 7-4 advantage.
In the Highlanders’ final at-bat, Frey walked with one out.
Goldschmidt doubled to put runners on second and third. Marling’s free pass
loaded the bases. Then, the Spring right fielder dropped a Cody Harmon fly ball
allowing Frey to score tightening the game to 7-5. But, a strike out and a soft
liner to first ended the contest.
With the loss, the sophs dropped to 11-3 for the season, 8-2
in 15-5A action.
