Highlanders Whip Conroe 9-1; Win District 15-5A Championship
With the 15-5A title on the line, TWHS sophomores unleashed a
13 hit attack on the Conroe Tigers and cruised to a 9-1 victory.
The Highlanders used a two out rally in the second to get the
scoring started. Austin Hutson singled and stole second. Pablo Fuentes drove in
Hutson with a base hit. Courtesy runner Derek Smith moved to third on a Nick
Parenti single and Josh Bickle came in to run for Parenti. On the next pitch,
Bickle broke for second on a delayed steal and Smith scored on the throw
pushing the lead to 2-0.
Another two out rally in the fourth increased the lead to
5-0. Hutson reached after being hit by a pitch. Parenti’s base hit drove in
Hutson, and Robbie Ray’s double scored courtesy runner Bickle. Ray came home on
a throwing error to finish the scoring in the fourth.
The Highlanders put things away in the fifth. Kyle Brundage
walked, Chris Frey singled, and Hutson singled to load the bases. Fuentes’
grounder drove in Brundage and Charlie Marling’s double plated two more. Ray’s
single drove in the fourth run of the inning leaving the Highlanders up 9-0.
The Tigers avoided the shutout with a run in the sixth, but
managed only three hits off winning pitcher Nick Parenti. Parenti struck out
five while reliever Charlie Marling punched out two of the three batters he
faced in the sixth.
With the victory, the sophs claimed the 15-5A Championship
with a 12-2 record and finished the ’03 campaign 15-3.
