7 county teams in weekly baseball Power Poll

County teams continue to fill most of the spots on The Courier's weekly baseball Power Poll, with seven area squads among the 10 schools in this week's rankings.




The Woodlands, which took third at the Minute Maid Classic at Minute Maid Park on Saturday, stays in the top spot in the 5A poll, followed by Tomball, the team it beat to earn the third-place trophy. TWHS opens 14-5A play on Tuesday at home against Klein Collins.

Conroe moves from No. 5 to a tie with Oak Ridge for No. 4 after the Tigers won the Pflugerville Connally Tournament over the weekend. The War Eagles are off to a strong start in their first season in 5A, with a 10-3 mark.

In the Class 4A/Others rankings, Montgomery lost its league-opener and went 2-2 at the Alvin Tournament, but remains on top with its solid 11-4 start to the season. New Caney, which beat the Bears and won the Caney Creek Tourney, enters the poll at No. 3, a spot ahead of Willis. TWCA is in the No. 5 position.




Class 5A
1. The Woodlands (11-1); The Highlanders split games with state-ranked Humble and beat nationally ranked Tomball.
2. Tomball (7-4); The Cougars fell to No. 1 The Woodlands in the third-place game at the Minute Maid Classic.
3. Langham Creek (10-1); The Lobos are off to a strong start.
4. Oak Ridge (10-3); The War Eagles went 3-1 at the Texas City Tournament
4. Conroe (8-5); The Tigers cruised to the title at the Pflugerville Connally Tourney; Conroe hosts Huntsville in 14-5A opener Tuesday.
Class 4A/Others
1. Montgomery (11-4); The Bears went 2-2 at the Alvin Tournament, losing to Dulles and beating Friendswood in its final two games
2. Brenham (8-3); The Cubs beat Caney Creek 10-0 to open 18-4A play.
3. New Caney (7-7); The Eagles beat No. 1 Montgomery to open district and won the Caney Creek Tourney.
4. Willis (6-5-1); The Wildkats closed out play at the Spring Woods Tourney with a 17-5 win over the host team.
5. The Woodlands Christian (8-1); The Warriors have gone 2-1 against previous No. 5 John Cooper.
