THE WOODLANDS - Ahead 3-1 in the count with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, The Woodlands first baseman Taylor Davis had no problem being patient.
He was waiting on a fastball from Bellaire reliever Jeremy Gould.
It came.
And it went.
Straight over the center-field wall for a grand slam to give the Highlanders a five-run lead and pave the way for their 13-5 win over Bellaire in a non-district matchup Saturday at Scotland Yard.
"I was just picking out my pitch," Davis said. "I knew it was coming. There was no way he was going to throw anything but that fastball with the bases loaded. And when it came, I was ready to swing."
The grand slam was Davis' second in three games and fourth multirun homer of the week. Davis homered three times in Tuesday's District 14-5A win over Oak Ridge, including another grand slam.
"I've been getting good looks on the ball and really working on my swing," Davis said. "But you can pretty much know when the time is right for a hit (like the grand slam). I could see that one coming."
A good thing, too, because Bellaire (16-8) had cut The Woodlands' lead to 6-5 on right fielder Steve Schroeder's RBI single in the top of the fifth.
But after The Woodlands (19-2) loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walks, Davis sent Gould's fifth pitch soaring for a 10-5 lead.
The Highlanders scored again before Bellaire got the final out in the fifth and added two runs in the sixth to go up 13-5 and put an end to the three-hour marathon.
Senior Steven Maxwell, who relieved starter Brice Ary in the third, picked up his second win of the season. Junior Drew Zizinia, who started for Bellaire and was followed by four relievers, fell to 2-2.
"It's a good opportunity to go against a great team like (Bellaire) at this point in the season," The Woodlands coach Ron Eastman said. "It gave some of our younger players a chance to get some experience and get their feet wet against a quality team."
