On a day when he helped The Woodlands 7-on-7 football team reach the quarterfinals of the state tournament, Kyle Drabek was honored for his baseball exploits by being named the Texas Sports Writers Association's Class 5A player of the year.
"He is a quite an unbelievable athlete," said TWHS head football coach and athletic director Mark Schmid Saturday at the state 7-on-7 tournament. "To be as good as he is in baseball and football, we feel lucky to have him."
The TWHS senior-to-be helped the Highlander baseball team reach the regional semifinals as a starter pitcher and shortstop. On the mound, the right-hander went 11-1 with a 0.79 ERA to go with 156 strikeouts in 71 innings. Drabek, who was recently named to next month's Aflac All-American Baseball Classic, also batted .500 with 32 RBIs.
Drabek was not the only Highlander honored by the TSWA. Taylor Davis was named to the second team as a designated hitter while outfielder Wayne Hrozek was named to the third team. Davis, who will play at Panola College, led the Highlanders with 10 homers, 38 RBIs and an .833 slugging percentage to go with his .429 batting average and 22 runs. Hrozek, an Arkansas signee, had a .364 average with 33 runs scored, 32 RBIs, two homers and seven doubles.
The final Montgomery County player honored was Montgomery Bear pitcher Michael Heard. The senior-to-be was instrumental in the Bears' run to the state tournament as he went 12-2 on the mound with a 1.54 ERA and 140 strikeouts. Heard had a .388 batting average with 43 runs scored, 27 RBIs, 12 doubles, two triples, and four homers.
